Recognising the important role local rescue organisations play in the community, Byron Shire Council is donating $15,600 to Brunswick Valley Volunteer Marine Rescue ($5,200), Brunswick Valley Rescue ($5,200) and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service ($5,200).
Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon, said the annual donations are an important way for Council to support these vital organisations.
“The Rescue Helicopter provides a magnificent service and while no one wants to get a ride in that helicopter it is very comforting know it is there,” Mayor Lyon said.
“It takes a huge amount of money to keep that operation going and I know our donation, coupled with fortnightly donations from our staff, is greatly valued,” he said.
“Brunswick Valley Volunteer Marine Rescue and the Brunswick Valley Rescue organisations are made up of local people who give their time to help us when we are in desperate need and we are pleased to be able to help them financially with an annual donation,” Mayor Lyon said.
Other recipients of Council donations include Tweed/Byron Life Education ($3,300) and the North Coast Academy of Sport ($4,000).
