Record numbers for Bayside bins
Bayside City Council 15 Jul 2021

The amount of waste Bayside sends to landfill has reduced to a new record low, beating our previous best in 2019/20 by under 1,000 tonnes.

Over the 2020/21 year, we reduced the amount of landfill by the equivalent of 148 elephants, 24 humpback whales or three Boeing 747 jets worth of waste. That’s a lot of waste!

This is great news and testament to the efforts of many residents now using our food and green waste recycling service instead of sending their food waste to landfill.

This result follows nearly 5,000 members of the Bayside community providing direct feedback for our bin-gagement on plans to switch the collections of general waste bins and food and green waste bins next year.

Feedback was collected face to face at our pop ups in shopping villages, farmers markets and libraries, online surveys and paper surveys.

Community engagement for the bin collection changes has now closed.

Next steps

The feedback will be used to inform the development of service options to assist residents most significantly impacted with the change to weekly food and green waste and fortnightly general waste next year.

The feedback and options will be considered by Councillors at the October 26 Council Meeting and used to start preparations for the changes in July 2022.

It’s great that we’re headed in the right direction but there’s always more we can do.
