Western Downs Regional Council is encouraging more people to head outdoors and explore the region’s fantastic recreational facilities, with a range of upgrades completed at Chinchilla Weir.
Council partnered with the Australian Government to fast-track a $1.9 million revamp of the popular spot as part of its COVID-19 Recovery Package to secure and create jobs and enhance the liveability of the region.
Council Spokesperson for Recreational Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said the upgrades had revitalised the facility and enhanced recreational opportunities for the region.
“This project has delivered a revamped facility perfect for a weekend camping adventure or simply for a picnic lunch by the water, and we are proud to celebrate our natural environment and heritage,” Cr Tillman said.
“This project involved various improvements including new fire pits, bin enclosures, shelters, picnic seating, barbeques, and entrance and wayfinding signage.
“A brand-new camp kitchen and formalised vehicle and RV parking have also been installed, and we have delivered fabulous upgrades to the landscaping, and day use areas to make the space more appealing for camping and for day trips.”
Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Events and Regional Promotion Councillor Kylie Bourne said the revamped facility would encourage more locals to explore their backyard and help to encourage more visitors to the region.
“We are proactively advancing our region as a tourism destination, and this project is about promoting our fantastic region and enticing more people to visit our towns and stay in our region a little longer,” Cr Bourne said.
“Chinchilla Weir is a much-loved recreational facility which is also a popular location for water sports, and I have no doubt these enhancements will only encourage more people visit and explore our fantastic local community.”
This project was delivered in partnership with the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
