New advisory committee
Bayside City Council 20 Jul 2021

Council’s newly established Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee held its first formal meeting at the beginning of May.

The Committee includes 10 community members who each bring a different experience of disability to help us to better understand the barriers faced by people living with a disability in Bayside, and to explore potential solutions.

These include issues about access to the built, natural and social environments and barriers to inclusion such as community and economic life in Bayside.

A key task on the agenda for the Advisory Committee in 2021 is to shape a dedicated Disability Action Plan, as part of Council’s Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan.

New committee member Emily Costello is a school teacher and a paraplegic who uses a manual wheelchair.

“I am passionate about ensuring inclusion for all,” Emily said.

“I’ve always been a big believer that if you want change to happen you have to be part of that change, so being a member of the committee provides me an opportunity to make a difference, to voice my opinion and to support change that is not only environmental but also attitudinal.”
