Cheer on your sporting heroes with friends, family and teammates, as Council live streams the Tokyo Olympics on the Esplanade from tomorrow.
Olympics Live presented by Westpac will run on two big screens near the Lagoon from 10am to 10pm each day of the Games (23 July to 8 August).
Mayor Bob Manning said the Olympics Live site was the perfect opportunity to get involved in the Olympics and even try your hand at some of the events.
“We have both a sport-mad community and a diverse multi-cultural community, so I’m sure there will be lots of residents keen to get together, grab a picnic and cheer on the athletes from their respective country,” Cr Manning said.
“We’d love to see residents and visitors alike get in the Olympic spirit by wearing their country colours or national dress for some good-natured rivalry, or join in the fun activities offered by our local sporting groups.”
Olympics Have A Go sessions will be run most afternoons during the Olympics Live festivities, or for the ‘sporting challenged’, origami workshops to celebrate the culture of this year’s host country Japan.
To celebrate host country Japan, Drum Infinity Mugendai (Japanese drummers) will perform on Friday 24 July from 7pm as a preview to the Opening Ceremony, and the Yosakoi Dance Team will perform at 6pm on Sunday 8 August before the Closing Ceremony.
Residents can share their photos with the #OlympicsLiveCairns hashtag.
