Yarraman is one step closer to becoming home to the Region’s first Tier 4 waste management facility with the tender for its design and construction recently released.
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Water and Waste portfolio leader Cr Nancy Sommerfield said the project was progressing following the approval of the Development Application in June.
“Council has moved to the next stage of the new Yarraman Waste Management Facility and we are now working towards requesting tenders,” Cr Sommerfield said.
The tender period opened on Saturday 17 July 2021.
Construction is scheduled to start in January 2022 and the new facility is expected to be open by June 2022.
The Yarraman Waste Management Facility is proudly funded by the Palaszczuk Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program in association with the Toowoomba Regional Council.
Assistant Minister for Local Government Nikki Boyd said the funding would support Toowoomba’s economic recovery.
“The global pandemic has hit places like Toowoomba particularly hard, and we’re committed to helping them recover with programs like the South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program,” Assistant Minister Boyd said.
“By teaming up with Toowoomba Regional Council to upgrade this facility we’re delivering 13 local jobs as part of Queensland’s plan for economic recovery.
“The Palaszczuk Government has a plan for jobs, and projects like this are a key part of that plan.”
Cr Sommerfield said although much smaller, the new Yarraman facility will be similar to the state-of-the-art flagship Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility (GTWMF).
“The project will greatly enhance the operations and better serve the Yarraman community while providing new opportunities to maximise diversion from landfill,” she said.
“The current landfill is predicted to reach capacity in the next two years, so this a critical project for the health and safety of our residents in Yarraman. That’s why Council has committed $3.5 million to the project this financial year, including $2 million received from the Queensland Government.
“Not everything will be new. The garden area used by members of the community will remain at the new facility, continuing a tradition that is popular with Yarraman residents.
“The facility is designed to allow improved recycling opportunities, reducing the volume of waste that ends up in our landfills.
“In late 2020, the community was asked to provide feedback on the proposed design of the facility which will be constructed on the existing site.
“The feedback we received was extremely positive and provided better insight into the specific needs of the community.
“There were a couple of suggestions raised by residents which were taken into consideration for the final design.”
Tenders close at 2pm AEST on 10 August 2021. Tenders can be lodged electronically via the VendorPanel Tenders.
