More than 400 people have had their say in the first week of a month-long consultation as the City of Cockburn prepares to review how it provides verge waste collection services into the future.

As the City’s population grows, so does the amount of waste produced, but every community is also charged with reducing its waste to meet State Government targets.

City of Cockburn Waste Manager Lyall Davieson said the State Government had set a target for communities to reduce waste by 10 per cent per person by 2030.

“The City aims to reduce waste by 12 per cent by 2024-25 and by 15 per cent by 2029-30, in line with our 10-year Waste Strategy,” Mr Davieson said.

“The City encourages Cockburn residents to submit their input by 19 August as we review and research hard/bulk and green waste verge collections options for the future.

“We have a responsibility to provide waste services that meet community needs while also working towards waste reduction goals for a sustainable future.

“Everyone has to be mindful of the waste they create as individuals because there will be further environmental and financial consequences if we don’t divert waste from landfill.

“We can do this by preventing the creation of waste by being more discerning consumers and reusing and recycling items.”

The City has arranged several ways for people to participate in the discussion about future hard/bulk and green waste verge collection methods, including three in-person workshops and two online workshops, and via an online or hard copy survey.
