Colac Otway Shire Council has welcomed the Federal Government’s funding announcement of $1.9 million for road safety measures to be installed in Murray Street, Colac.
Shire Mayor Kate Hanson said the funding announcement made by Member for Wannon Dan Tehan would enable safety works to be completed as recommended in Council’s Colac CBD & Entrances Project.
“Council have advocated for safety measures to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety in Colac’s CBD and we’re pleased work will commence on this important project.
“The $1.9 million project will deliver installation of electronic speed signage for a daytime 40km/h speed limit, fully controlled right turns on most signal approaches, pedestrian early start phases, Give Way to pedestrian signs, improved signal sighting and a pedestrian refuge.
“These are all measures that improve visibility of pedestrians to vehicles and help keep all road users safe.
“In Council’s CBD and Entrances Project we made a commitment to our community to create a pedestrian-focussed, accessible and well-connected CBD precinct, particularly for those with limited mobility, which these safety measures will address.
“While we continue to face challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, improving Colac Otway’s Murray Street shopping precinct will be a key component in the renewal and recovery for the shire,” Cr Hanson said.
Federal Government funding for this project is provided under the 2021-22 Black Spot Program.
