Western Downs Regional Council is empowering communities to be more environmentally friendly, with applications now open for this year’s Recycle Market Enviro Grants funding program.
Local organisations are encouraged to apply for funding as part of the grants program which is delivered in partnership with Council’s waste and recycling contractor IOLAR Operational Services.
Council Spokesperson for Planning, Environment and Agribusiness Councillor Andrew Smith said the program was an opportunity to give back to the community and promote the importance of being sustainable.
“The Enviro Grants Program is made possible thanks to our residents recycling, reusing and upcycling second-hand goods at our Recycling Market Shops at Dalby, Chinchilla, and Miles Waste and Recycling Centres,” Cr Smith said.
“A massive forty percent of the money raised at our tip shops is reinvested into the Program to support various environmental initiatives across the Western Downs.
“Council is committed to empowering communities to develop local initiatives and this grants program has supported fantastic initiatives in the past such as feral animal monitoring equipment, solar panels, and watering systems and equipment.
“This is a fantastic example of what can be done when we work together, and I encourage the community to put forward their applications so we can help bring their ideas to life.”
Chinchilla Community Kindergarten Director Sarah Waters said Council’s Enviro Grants provided the opportunity to make sustainable improvements to the Kindy.
“We were successful in receiving an enviro grant last round, which enabled us to install solar panels on the building roof,” Mrs Waters said.
“These projects make a significant different to our operating costs and allow us to be more environmentally aware.”
Applications are now open and will close on 30 September 2021.
