Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will soon undertake an audit of vacant and/or under-utilised Council-owned land to identify opportunities for generating social and economic benefit.
TRC Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan raised the motion at the July Ordinary Meeting of Council, stating that this was an important first step to help the regional communities throughout the Toowoomba Region.
“Council has significant land assets in a variety of locations across the Region,” Cr O’Hara said.
“In some instances that land is currently underutilised and may be surplus to Council’s future operational or strategic requirements.
“We need to assess whether any of that surplus land could potentially be used to assist with improving the viability of community projects that Council might wish to support.
“This would be incredibly important, especially for our regional areas such as Yarraman.
“The Yarraman Business Group has prepared a strategy aimed at attracting an aged care/assisted living provider to Yarraman and has sought Council’s support in promoting the aged care/assisted living opportunity to potential operators.
“I believe this is an idea worth consideration and as such we will invite the Yarraman Business Group to a future meeting of Council to discuss their vision for an aged care centre being established in Yarraman.”
The motion to undertake an audit of vacant and/or under-utilised Council-owned land was passed at the Ordinary Meeting of Toowoomba Regional Council on 20 July 2021.
