Local Government Week (2-8 August 2021) offers the chance to reflect on the major role council plays in improving Liverpool as a place to live, work and visit.
The theme for this year’s Local Government Week is “Locally Led”, highlighting the important role councils play in driving the local economic recovery and maintaining jobs in Liverpool.
“Many people know that Liverpool City Council is responsible for local roads, rates and rubbish, but are less aware of the many other services we provide,” Mayor Wendy Waller said.
“We operate six local libraries, provide spaces for community groups, administer grants, maintain playgrounds and sporting fields, run Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, six Early Education and Care Centres and one Preschool.”
“Local Government Week offers the perfect opportunity to find out what our Council does and to learn about services you may not know about. Every day we aim to make Liverpool a great place to work and live, and these efforts have been even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Wendy Waller.
Council has an important role to play during the COVID-19 lockdown. This year it has been vital to provide support to NSW Health to ensure messages reach the community about the various levels of restrictions which also includes communication to those of a non-English speaking background.
Council is also assisting in bringing vaccines closer to home for Liverpool residents by providing local premises for four pop-up vaccination hubs in Liverpool community centres that will open from Monday 2 August. The pop-up vaccination hubs will operate on a walk-in basis and have the capability to administer hundreds of vaccinations.
There are many staff at Liverpool City Council who continue to be frontline workers and provide the community with the services and support they need during a difficult time. Some continued services to name a few include waste collection, emergency roads maintenance, access to safe and clean parks, Early Education and Care Centre and Preschool services and Customer Service support via the phone and online.
