The rollout of the City of Wanneroo’s lime-green lid Garden Organics (GO) bins is now complete, with over 61,000 bins delivered to eligible properties throughout June and July.

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said it was great to see people enthusiastically embracing the GO system and doing their part to ensure a brighter, greener future.

“Typically, household general waste bins contain 32 per cent garden organic waste, 23 per cent food organic waste, 26 per cent recyclable materials and only 18 per cent actual general waste,” she said.

“By implementing the GO bins for organic waste, such as lawn clippings, small branches, weeds, flowers, plants and leaves, the City estimates that every year 14,000 tonnes of clean green waste will be transformed into high quality soil-enhancing products, such as mulch and potting mix.

“Delivering over 61,000 GO bins in just six weeks is a terrific achievement. The swift rollout has helped ensure a smooth transition to the new system for our community, and by using it correctly, we can all play a huge part in achieving WA’s target of reducing waste to landfill by 70 per cent by 2025.”

Hocking resident Joan Day, an avid gardener and 'earth cycler', said she wanted to contribute to a better environment by helping the City divert resources from landfill.

“I put food scraps, leaves and lawn clippings in my compost bin, but a lot of what’s in our GO bin has come off the pomegranate tree, lemon and lime trees, which were overgrowing and had to be trimmed back,” she said.

“Before, that all went in the green rubbish bin for the landfill and waste. We love having the new GO bin because we know it’s all going to become compost.

“I’m very careful to dispose of clean greens loosely to ensure plastic doesn’t make its way into the high quality soil products, and we don’t use plastic bags to collect our green waste, we use buckets and a wheelbarrow.”

Throughout August, the City will deliver the smaller 140L red lid general waste bins to registered properties only.
