Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and current Public Health Orders impacting Greater Sydney, the NSW Government has postponed the NSW Local Government elections and announced Saturday 4 December 2021 as the new date.
“This new date has delayed the commencement of new Councillors, however, the health and wellbeing of the community must come first”, said Council’s General Manager Lester Rodgers.
This extension of time will see Mayor Humphries continue in her position as Mayor until December, however, a Deputy Mayor Election will need to be conducted in September because under the Local Government Act Regulation the Deputy Mayor term is only for 1 year which expires in September.
“Council is looking forward to onboarding the new Councillors and working together to shape the community now and into the future.”
Councils won’t hold by-elections before December 4 to fill vacancies as the NSW Government has stated the normal election process will fill casual positions between now and December 4.
iVote (electronic voting) will also be available for the first time in the Local Council elections and the NSW Government has implemented changes to pre-poll to ensure that voters have 13 days to cast their ballot, reducing congestion on polling day.
Nominations for members of the public who are interested in becoming a Councillor will open on Monday 25 October 2021 and close on Wednesday 3 November 2021.
This postponement of the next ordinary Local Government elections will not affect the timing of future Council elections, and the subsequent ordinary Local Government elections will still proceed in September 2024.
Important Dates to Note:
25 October 2021 - Candidate nominations open. 22 November 2021 - Pre-poll voting starts. 29 November 2021- Postal vote applications can be submitted until 5 pm. 21- 23 December 2021 - Counting results will be finalised.
