Celebrations for NAIDOC Week 2021 have been plentiful throughout this year's activities and programs on offer in the Shire of Coolgardie. Partnering with Judumul Advisory Aboriginal Corporation for the 2nd year we saw young and old community members come together to celebrate the theme "Heal Country".
A Raising of The Flag ceremony was hosted by Judumul to open this years Naidoc Week activities. A community BBQ, cooked by volunteers from the Coolgardie Community Men’s Shed, was held after the ceremony in the Coolgardie Park.
A Dot painting workshop was held by Rose at the Judumul building and was enjoyed by residents of all ages.
With the support of local Service Providers, the Kambalda Community Resource Centre hosted a range of fun and engaging activities to choose from. Activities included a movie screening showing the popular movie "The Sapphires", a bush tucker session for adults, a mini bush tucker session for young children, a day of arts and crafts in the Kambalda Public Library as well as an Aboriginal Dreamtime story time on our last day. There was something for everyone to enjoy!
The arts and crafts activities in the library were so popular, they remained out for another day with many more families able to try out the dot bark painting, yarn sticks, rock painting and colouring in. A beautiful large canvas kindly donated by Mara Pirni Healing Place in Kalgoorlie was created with the help of the many children who attended the craft activities day. Community members passing by throughout the day joined in and added their unique pieces to the canvas.
During the bush tucker session Centrecare staff and attendees cooked up a storm making bush tomato and Saltbush scones as well as Wattleseed shortbread and pikelets adding local tucker jams and spreads.
Another highlight was when a community member brought in bush tucker and shared his knowledge about the many benefits of adding native ingredients to your everyday diet. Those who tried it for the first time, were intrigued and surprised with the taste.
Coolgardie resident Rose Mitchell delivered yet another successful Dreamtime story time for young children along with her own artwork and re-telling the story of "The Thirsty Lizard". This had children fully focussed during the session and creating their own lizard dot art at the end.
What a wonderful week of celebrating history, culture and the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with the community for NAIDOC Week 2021.
