It’s Local Government Week in NSW – a time to put the spotlight on Byron Shire Council and the role local governments play in providing grass roots support and services for their communities.
“Unlike other levels of government, local governments are out there working at ground level to directly help their local communities,” Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon, said.
“This is extremely important when you take something like COVID-19 into account,” Mayor Lyon said.
“The one thing we do know about COVID is how fast things can change and as a Council it is so important that we are prepared to respond quickly to anything that comes our way,” Mayor Lyon said.
“Council staff have worked really hard over the last 18 months to keep the community updated on COVID-19, adapting as needed and this was especially important in the early days of the pandemic when all of us were scared about what the future was going to bring,” he said.
“Council builds people’s roads, operates the sewer and collects the rubbish but there’s a huge list of other services and support we provide and Local Government Week is a time to acknowledge this work,” Mayor Lyon said.
Some of the things Byron Shire Council is responsible for on behalf of its 15,000 ratepayers include:
517km of sealed roads and 91km of dirt roads 226 bridges, major culverts and causeways 71 parks 35 playgrounds 10 sports fields 7 skateparks 1 pump track 20 hard courts 2 pools 25 public toilets 3 libraries 20 community halls/centres 11 emergency services buildings“I take this opportunity to thank all the staff at Council for the work they do for the community,” Mayor Lyon said.
