MWCMF postponed due to border closures

The 2021 Mildura Wentworth Country Music Festival (MWCMF) will not go ahead on 24 September 2021 as planned due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Event organiser David Storer from Mildura Entertainment said border closures had ultimately led to the postponement of this year’s festival.

It will now be held from Friday 23 September to Saturday 1 October 2022.

“We’re devastated that it’s come to this, but unfortunately the current border situation, limitations on crowd numbers and the uncertainty around the pandemic has meant the event is simply not viable at this time,” he said.

“Our performers and audiences need assurances that they will be able to attend the festival from other states, and with the ongoing outbreaks in NSW and Queensland, and border restrictions currently in place, this simply cannot happen.

“We want to be able to put on the best possible event, and be able to attract the best acts. It’s a tough decision to postpone the 2021 MWCMF, but ultimately we think it’s the right one given the current circumstances.

“Hopefully we can proceed in 2022. Not only does the community need this event, but so does the acts and festival goers who visit our region every year.”

Councillor for Recreation and Events Liam Wood said he was also disappointed the hallmark MWCMF would not proceed this year.

“We know how successful this festival is in attracting visitors to our region. It’s an event that brings in a lot of tourism dollars for our local accommodation providers, restaurants and businesses,” he said.

“While the COVID-19 pandemic has claimed a number of big events over the past 18 months, the safety of local residents, visitors and performers needs to take precedence.

“I look forward to seeing the MWCMF return in 2022 bigger and better than ever, and we will continue to work with Mildura Entertainment and David to make sure this happens.”

Mildura Rural City Council general manager Community Martin Hawson said Council would continue to offer support to Mildura Entertainment to ensure the festival’s success in 2022.

“David should be commended for the work he’s done. In a short time, and in trying circumstances, he managed put together a great program of talent,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate that circumstances outside of his control have forced the festival’s postponement.

“Council will continue to work with David and Mildura Entertainment over the next 12 months to ensure the 2022 event is the best it can be.”
