Two works from the Redland Art Gallery (RAG) Collection have been loaned to the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) for an exhibition.
Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the loan was a great opportunity to promote the RAG Collection to a broader audience.
“It is exciting that larger institutions like State Library of Queensland recognise the quality of works in the RAG Collection,” she said.
“They are not alone. RAG works have also been loaned to the Museum of Brisbane, the National Portrait Gallery and Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).
“Most recently, another work from the RAG Collection was loaned to Logan Art Gallery for a Kyra Mancktelow exhibition in June and July.”
The two works on loan to the SLQ are I am your spine and Nerut kerker (future) and Peim Kerker (dreaming) by Brisbane-based artists Hannah Gutchen and Hannah Brontë.
Two Redland Art Gallery works, I am your spine and Nerut kerker (future) and Peim Kerker (dreaming) by Hannah Gutchen and Hannah Brontë, are on display at State Library of Queensland.
RAG Director Emma Bain said the works were from a series of four fibre garments commissioned by Redland Art Gallery for the 2016 exhibition Gathering Strands.
“These works celebrate traditional weaving techniques and serve as a metaphor for the resilience and strength of the artists’ female ancestors,” Ms Bain said.
“Hannah Gutchen is a Torres Strait Island and Jewish woman and Hannah Brontë is a Wakka Wakka/Yaegl woman.
“The curator at SLQ contacted us directly as they wanted these specific works to be included in the exhibition Entwined: plants and people.
“They were last on display at GOMA in 2017, so I encourage local residents to take the opportunity to have a look at these works while they are on display at the State Library of Queensland.”
The Entwined: plants and people exhibition is at SLQ in South Bank, Brisbane until 14 November 2021.
