Regrettably, our expected completion date for the Sandringham Athletics Track upgrade has been extended to early December 2021. The delay results from experiencing unseasonably wet weather in April and May; unexpected COVID-19 lockdowns impacted works and supplies; and some low-level soil contamination was found which had to be safely removed. Combined, these unexpected issues meant that Council’s contractor could not complete the project before the winter season.
The new high-quality athletics track involves installing layers of porous material which must be completely dry before laying the competition quality synthetic rubber surface. If the top rubber layer is installed over wet under-layers, the moisture rises resulting in bubbling of the surface. Unfortunately, this meant works have ceased until spring when the surface can be installed in warmer, drier weather.
The track and toilets remain closed until the completion of the project in early December. Temporary parking restrictions on the west side of Glamis Avenue and in Fewster Road have been lifted until the first week of September when construction work resumes. Restrictions on the eastern side of Glamis Avenue will remain until further notice.
We expect to have our young, future Olympians training on the new track in summer.
