Water is a precious resource and despite healthy dam levels in Sydney, we are committed to doing everything we can to conserve it.

What is Council doing to be water-wise?

We have recently replaced water-intensive washing machines at four of our child care centres with commercial-grade machines. Centres at Belrose, Dee Why, Brookvale and Brookvale Pre School will see a combined saving of close to 175,000 litres of water, as part of our water conservation partnership with Sydney Water.

By using WELS* 4 and 6 star-rated equipment such as aerators on taps and showerheads, we are saving at least 115,000 litres of water each year. Upgrades have recently taken place at Mona Vale Library and Council’s Boondah Depot, Warriewood.

We have recently signed up to a pilot program with Sydney Water that will help us better understand our water usage at high using sites, such as Boondah Depot and Boondah Reserve at Warriewood, by using a data logger. This helps identify any leaks and will guide future water conservation projects.   

Our free water saving assessments for local businesses have already saved more than 53 million litres over the last year. This is the equivalent to over 20 Olympic swimming pools! While we can’t currently provide face-to-face assessments due to lockdown, we can offer free online assessments for cafes, restaurants and pubs interested in reducing their water bills by helping to spot and fix leaks. These Council projects are taking us a step closer to reaching our targets set out in the Environment & Climate Change Strategy and demonstrate our commitment to sustainability by investing in alternate water sourcing and water efficiency.
