New policy to guide Cairns Esplanade use MEDIA RELEASE

A new policy providing better clarity on the types of activities and events that can take place on the Cairns Esplanade has been endorsed by Council.

The Esplanade Usage General Policy has been developed following comprehensive stakeholder and community engagement, which included more than 2000 public responses.

Extending from Smith St in the north and Spence St to the south, the Cairns Esplanade Reserve is considered the region’s premier parklands, providing opportunities for a diverse range of recreation and leisure experiences.

Its appeal has been strengthened following the completed dining precinct has re-energised the space and strengthened its appeal.

With competing demands on the space and a strong connection to it by residents and business, Council recognised the need for a policy that ensures usage is effectively managed.

Five key principles have guided the development of the new policy:

The primary purpose of the reserve is to serve the community as a place for informal gatherings and general recreation.Approved periodic uses such as programs, events, activities or third-party hire should not significantly diminish the primary purpose.Periodic uses must align with the expectations of the public and enhance the destination appeal of the reserve for locals and visitors to the region.Council operations should be able to occur in a safe, secure and efficient manner.Adverse impacts to the surrounding environment, businesses and residents are mitigated.

The above resolution needs to be ratified at the next Ordinary Meeting of Council, to be held on 25 August 2021.
