Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is inviting residents to join National Tree Day activities at three Council parks at Westbrook and Drayton on Saturday, September 4, 2021 from 8-11am.
TRC Parks and Recreation Services portfolio leader Cr Tim McMahon, pictured, said public tree planting would be held at Westbrook Park, Centenary Park (Barwick Street, Westbrook) and Drayton’s Mount Peel Bushland Park.
Cr McMahon said Council would plant more than 2500 native trees, shrubs and grasses at the three venues, with more trees to be planted across the Region this month.
“The species that will be planted are predominantly endemic to the areas that have been chosen. These include eucalypts, grevilleas, melaleucas, acacias, plus other native shrubs and grasses,” Cr McMahon said.
“National Tree Day is part of an initiative to increase our Region’s urban forest population.
“Our Region is well known as home to Australia’s Garden City of Toowoomba and planting an additional 2000 trees will enhance our established reputation.
“This is an open event for everyone in our community to participate in and enjoy.
“While we would love to see a huge turnout, local tree enthusiasts keen to participate in the day’s activities are urged to make a booking.”
Participants will need to bring their own gloves, trowels and drinking water with them on the day.
Enclosed shoes, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, a broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen are also highly recommended.
To register your interest, please call Council on 131 872 or email [email protected]
While National Tree Day is marked officially on August 1, TRC organises a date in early September to coincide with spring and this year’s extended Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers program, which runs for all of September.
Planet Ark’s National Tree Day, which is sponsored by Toyota, is held annually to inspire communities to plant trees and protect nature.
