While we’re lucky enough to live on the Northern Beaches with a relatively low crime rate, vehicle break-ins and car theft do happen.

Local police have asked us to spread the message given vehicle and home break-ins continue to occur even in lockdown.

There are things you can do to protect your belongings and your vehicle.

What can you do? Always lock your vehicle and make sure your windows are fully closedNever leave your car unattended with the key in the ignition, even when your car is parked in your drivewayDon’t hide spare keys inside or under your vehicle – thieves know where to lookAvoid parking in dimly lit or isolated areasRemove any documents in your vehicle which identify where you live – your home might be a thief’s next targetRemember take any valuables with you each time you leave your vehicle.

Seven in 10 cars are stolen with their own keys.[1] Many are stolen with offenders sneaking into homes by taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows.

What you can do at home Pop your keys out of sight and away from windows and doors. Don’t leave them lying around on tables, benches or key hooks. If a thief can see your unattended keys, they are likely to be able to get hold of themLock doors and windows at home, and make sure the rest of your household does the sameWhen you leave home on foot (for essentials reasons) make sure you have your keys with you.

If your vehicle is stolen or you believe your home or car has been broken into, please report to Dee Why Police Station on 9971 3399 (24 hours). If it’s an emergency, call 000.
