The City of Sydney is calling on budding young artists to help make our Year of the Tiger celebrations a roaring success, with a competition that will see their designs on display across the city.
The winning illustrations will be seen on street banners, bus shelters, billboards and across advertising channels as part of the Sydney Lunar Festival 2022 from 29 January to 13 February.
This is the first time the City has drawn on young talent to create the Sydney Lunar Festival hero artwork.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase children’s unique talents and help reinvigorate the city centre after the pandemic lockdown.
“We’re pushing ahead with plans for the 2022 Sydney Lunar Festival so that when we emerge from the Covid-19 lockdown, we’re ready to transform our streets into a colourful gallery with installations, activations and artworks welcoming the Year of the Tiger,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Young people contribute so much to our city – they help make it a fun, vibrant and joyful place to be, and I’m sure they’ll bring that unique perspective to their creative work.
“In Chinese culture, tigers are seen as the guardian of children, so I think it’s only fitting that we hand over creative control for our Year of the Tiger Sydney Lunar Festival celebrations to our youngest citizens.
“It’s going to be a special privilege to look at all the colourful tiger illustrations submitted as part of this competition, but I’m sure it’s not going to be an easy task selecting just six winning designs.”
Six designs by junior Sydney illustrators aged 5 to 12 years will be selected, with the winning young artists also receiving a $150 arts and craft gift card.
We are looking for fun and playful drawings of tigers that are celebrating the Lunar New Year. The Sydney Lunar Festival tiger could be:
eating or drinking a favourite Asian food or drink performing or playing sports and games associated with Lunar New Year happy, friendly or cuddly fierce and strong.Entrants can submit up to three illustrations and a short description on each.
