$500,000 in grants to support CBCity community groups

A mobile food van to feed the needy and a multi-lingual children’s storytime video series are two of the many community programs and initiatives that are being funded through Canterbury-Bankstown’s 2020-21 Community Grants and Events Sponsorship Program.

Mayor Khal Asfour said Council received 112 applications from community groups and organisations, requesting more than $814,000.

“Of those, 91 were successful in receiving a grant of up to $15,000,” Mayor Asfour said.

Among the successful applicants was the Bankstown Community Resource Group, which will use its $15,000 grant to produce a video series of local multi-lingual children telling stories, to promote the importance of reading in native languages to children from birth.

While $10,000 was granted to Maronites on Mission Australia, to establish a food van in Canterbury-Bankstown, serving complete meals and beverages to the less fortunate throughout the City.

“The successful applicants were selected based on how their project would benefit residents, particularly our most vulnerable, such as the elderly and people with disability, as well as people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities,” Mayor Asfour said.

“There’s a wide range of community groups and organisations that will receive funding, from neighbourhood and community centres to youth, family and senior service providers, religious groups, multicultural organisations, disability support services and sporting clubs.”
