​Almost 150 Canterbury-Bankstown business people were given practicable tips and advice on how to get financial assistance, during a special COVID grants webinar last week.

The City of Canterbury Bankstown, in partnership with the Canterbury-Bankstown Chamber of Commerce, hosted the free information webinar to assist local businesses who may be struggling to stay afloat during this lockdown.

Representatives from Service NSW, NSW Treasury, Xary Tax Accountants and Collappor8 shared information on how to navigate through the financial support grants available under both the Federal and State Government’s COVID relief packages.

The webinar was led by Mayor Khal Asfour. Other speakers included:

NSW Treasury Senior Analyst Andrew Lockie;Service NSW Council Relationship Manager – Sydney Metro South Matthew Arraiza;Xary Tax Accountants CEO Ahmad Trad; andCollabor8 Director Leah Ostermeyer.

“I’m overwhelmed, but not shocked, by the number of businesses that registered for yesterday’s virtual event,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Lockdowns have been incredibly tough on our business community, and if it’s not the lockdowns it’s the mere threat of a lockdown.

“Uncertainty, mixed messaging, inconsistencies are all adding to our frustrations. And from what I’ve heard loud and clear, the cumbersome and complex access to COVID Support payments.”

During the webinar, business people were walked through:

The application process for businesses grants (COVID-19 Business Grant, COVID-19 Jobsaver and COVID-19 Micro Business Grant);How to navigate the COVID-19 Assistance Finder, useful for businesses and individuals to find out what support is available; andTax-time questions and answer forum.

Canterbury-Bankstown has more than 37,500 business, which generate a Gross Regional Product of more than $15 billion. The City’s largest sector is manufacturing, followed by health care and construction.
