Cairns Libraries is celebrating Children’s Book Week with reading sessions, creative activities and dress-ups.
Since 1945, the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has used Book Week to celebrate reading and books with a particular focus on Australian children’s authors and illustrators.
This year, Cairns Libraries has been taking part in the annual event (21-27 August), which has been themed Olds Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds, with the Storydogs reading program, futuristic craft construction activities, guest storytellers including the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans (Earlville Library, Thursday 26 August at 4pm), dress-up Storytimes, and a collection of displays at each of the libraries.
Deputy Mayor Terry James said Book Week was the perfect opportunity to get children interested in reading.
“We know that encouraging children to read from an early age can have great benefits for a child’s schooling,” Cr James said
“Getting children interested in books and reading at an early age has benefits that will continue for a lifetime."
