Graduate Accountant

Mareeba Shire Council has an opportunity for a Graduate Accountant to join our Finance team.  The Graduate Accountant is responsible for supporting the Finance Group, particularly the Management Accounting section, to fulfil the obligations of asset accounting and the provision of information to enable better business planning decisions.  On an average day you are likely to capture data in Council’s asset registers, liaise with Senior engineering staff to determine the remaining useful life of an asset, undertake accounting and administrative processes associated with depreciation, valuation, impairment, asset capitalisation, sale and disposal, refer to an Act or Regulation to ensure legislative compliance, set up a new job number in Council’s general ledger or Chart of Accounts and prepare information for the Management Accountant to be used for reporting purposes.

Tertiary qualifications in Accounting are essential and membership, or eligibility for membership, into CPA or Chartered Accountant is desirable.  You need to have well-developed written and oral communication skills and advanced skills with Microsoft Excel and Word.  You must be a strong researcher and provide reliable, fact-checked information.  You must be self-motivated, highly organised and be able to work autonomously.
