Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has announced four new community members who will serve on Council’s Regional Active and Public Transport Advisory Committee (RAPTAC).
Council had 16 nominations for the four positions, and is very appreciative of all who nominated, and hence it was a challenging decision to select the new appointees.
The appointment of Marcel Govers, Wendy McNamara, Kylie Jeffrey and Tony Platz was approved at Council's August Ordinary Meeting.
Council also approved the appointment of Andrew Demack, Director of Advocacy at Bicycle Queensland, as an observer to the voluntary advisory committee.
TRC Infrastructure Services Committee portfolio leader and RAPTAC chair Cr Melissa Taylor welcomed the new appointments.
“I look forward to drawing on the new committee members’ ideas about ways to encourage more residents to incorporate walking and/or cycling into their daily routines and/or for leisure pursuits to improve their health and well-being,” Cr Taylor said.
“The committee also contributes ideas around public transport, which informs Council’s discussions with the state government, relevant public transport operators and interested user groups.”
Cr Taylor said RAPTAC, which was established in 2013, had offered valuable input which contributed to Council initiatives such as direct involvement in TransLink’s new bus services (2017), the signing of the International Walking Charter (2018) and the Transport and Active Living Forum (2019).
Cr Taylor thanked outgoing members Sheree Hughes (Heart Foundation), John Osborne OAM, Maria Sloane (Yellowbridge) and Tomas Coory for their contributions to the committee.
The new appointees will join continuing committee members Anna Campbell (Walk Queensland), Tracy Kolbe-Alexander (USQ), Chris Reynolds, Todd Rohl (Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce) and Bruce Steele.
Mr Daniel Naisch (Department of Transport and Main Roads) and Michael Timmer (TransLink) will continue as advisors to the voluntary advisory committee.
The advisory committee’s term will coincide with the current Council, ending in 2024.
Active and public transport includes travel by foot, bicycle or other wheeled recreation devices, wheelchair, bus, taxi and other ride share schemes, for either transport or recreation.
