Council secures over $3.5 million to improve roads

Yass Valley Council has been successful in applying for more than $3.5 million in grants to improve the local road network between 2021 and 2023.

The funding has been received under the:

Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program Phase 3 (Federal Government) - $1,714,454 Safer Roads Program 2021/22 (NSW Government) - $455,000 Black Spot Program 2021/22 (Federal Government) - $1,405,000

“Yass Valley Council is responsible for the management of approximately 1250 kilometres of roads, of which 590 km is unsealed, which places a large burden on Council’s annual budget,” said Yass Valley Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Assets James Dugdell.

“This is a huge win for Yass Valley residents as these grants will enable us to accelerate the maintenance and upgrading of the road network.

“What’s more, we are using local businesses and workforces to deliver projects under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to ensure stimulus funds flow into the local community during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The funding will be allocated to:

Mulligans Flat Road safety improvements - shoulder widening and vegetation clearing - $745,000 Murrumbateman Road safety improvements - shoulder widening, barrier installation and audio-tactile marker placement - $660,000 Nanima Road safety upgrades – chevron assisted markers on selected bends, curve and speed advisory signs, and audible tactile line marking - $455,000 Gravel re-sheeting of Council’s unsealed road network - $1,000,000

The remaining $714,454 is subject to a further report to Council.
