People who own property in the Byron Shire that has heritage values are invited to apply for a Local Heritage Places Grant.
Applications for the grant, which is funded by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, are now open.
Shannon Burt, Director Sustainable Environment and Economy said there are approximately 187 properties in the shire that have heritage values and these grants provide some financial help to owners to help with maintaining those values.
“The grants also extend to enhancing historic streetscapes and other projects that promote the community’s appreciation of local history,” Ms Burt said.
Successful applicants last year (2020) included the Byron Community Centre and the owner of the Bangalow Masonic Hall.
“In the case of the Byron Community Centre the grant paid for the replacement of window hoods and maintenance on the façade and at the Masonic Hall there was much-needed work done on the building’s façade and repairs to the windows.
“Property owners need to contribute one dollar for every dollar of grant funding so in effect they are only footing half the bill which in some cases could save them thousands,” Ms Burt said.
“The upkeep of a property with heritage values, especially one that has been allowed to get run-down so I am encouraging people to take advantage of this grant program,” she said.
The closing date for applications is 24 September 2021 and the work must be finished by 30 March 2022.
