Wyndham City is proud to announce Yadani Fekadu as its One Wyndham recipient for September.
Ms Fekadu was nominated for the award by her teacher at Emmanuel College. She was described as an inspiring and passionate advocate for social justice, fairness and inclusion.
One Wyndham recipients are residents aged between 12 and 25 who positively contribute to the Wyndham community and are role models to other young people.
Each month Council selects a Wyndham resident to be awarded the ‘Young Person of the Month’.
Winners are awarded a $200 gift voucher of their choice and other prizes.
Ms Fekadu is studying year 12 at Emmanuel College in Point Cook and is an inspiring social justice champion. She has gone above and beyond in raising awareness and volunteering her time to help others.
Wyndham Mayor Cr Adele Hegedich said: “Yadani is a Year 12 student leader and actively involved in her school. She has excelled in her dedication and commitment to raise awareness of social issues such as discrimination, gender equity and asylum seekers and refugees.”
“As well as fundraising, volunteering and leading, she is hard working and a great representative for Wyndham and an inspiring role model for students.”
Ms Fekadu credits her fellow students for her achievements: “I need to credit the significant help I've had from my fellow Social Justice Mission Captains at my school – Jake and Georgia, the Social Justice staff and team at my school, along with the other bright leaders on our Year 12 leadership team and the rest of the Emmanuel Community.”
“Nothing our Social Justice team have done this year would have been possible without our Emmanuel College community.”
Ms Fekadu’s outstanding contribution as Social Justice Captain this year has resulted in nearly $20,000 raised in the community for international aid, local mental health services, local support for the homeless and the cancer council, Relay for life and currently the St Vinnies Winter sleep out.
Cr Hegedich said: “Yadani is making a positive difference in our community by encouraging inclusion and raising awareness of injustices and helps to provide platforms for fundraising to help those in need.”
