Australia Day award nominations open

Community members are invited to nominate inspirational Corangamite Shire residents and groups for the 2022 Australia Day Awards.

Nominations for the Corangamite Shire Australia Day Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year awards open Monday 6 September and close Monday 18 October.

The awards will be presented as part of the Shire’s Australia Day Celebrations in Cobden on Tuesday 26 January 2022.

Mayor Ruth Gstrein invited Corangamite Shire residents to nominate people and events who deserved recognition for their contributions to the community.

“This is a terrific opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the many volunteers, individuals, groups and organisations that have contributed to the safety, wellbeing and connectedness of our community,” Cr Gstrein said.

“Difficult times like we have experienced during the coronavirus pandemic highlight the importance of community.

“Despite lockdown restrictions our communities have continued to support each other—whether it be shopping for a neighbour, delivering meals, phoning to check up on elderly or vulnerable residents, or setting up social media groups to keep in touch.

“Sadly many events have been postponed, but some organisers have held small activities under stringent COVIDSafe conditions. Other events have moved online, using technology to overcome the challenge of physical distancing.

“I encourage everyone to have a think and nominate someone who has given their time and energy to help others. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be uplifted and inspired by their efforts in challenging times.”

Nomination forms and guidelines are available here or by calling Council on 5593 7100.

Details of the 2022 Australia Day celebrations will be confirmed closer to the date, subject to COVID-19 restrictions at the time.
