Less recyclables ending up in landfill

An audit of Portsmith Transfer Station residual waste has revealed a 10% drop this year in the amount of recycled materials being sent to landfill.

A focus on improving waste management and recovery processes at Council transfer stations, including the installation of extra collection infrastructure to make it easier for residents to recycle, additional engagement with residents to recover items for Buyback Shop, improved sorting and battery stewardship, has helped reduce the amount of recyclables ending up in landfill to 23%.

Residents have also played a role by placing fewer recyclable materials in their red lid bins.

Council has also doubled the city’s recycling and recovery capacity with the commissioning of a new state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility early this year.

The facility, which was officially opened in May, includes a new shed, glass-sorting and processing plant that can manage up to 30,000 tonnes of recycling each year, and an education room.
