Dating back to 1897, Fremantle Markets has quite the history.

In the early days, visitors would arrive by horse and cart, there were stables out back and chook pens for poultry auctions.

Caretakers lived on site to open and close the gates, sweep the grounds and clean the space.

In the 70s the markets underwent a dramatic refurbishment and the Market Bar was born, which saw Friday night performances by buskers including local legend John Butler.

Today the markets boast over 150 stalls to explore, from fresh produce to handmade wares by local artisans. We spoke to Fremantle Markets CEO Natasha Atkinson on what to see and do on your next visit.

What can people find at Fremantle Markets?

History! If only these walls could talk. From ex-convicts hiding in the rafters to a lady being trapped under the floorboards, the market is full of wonderful history and stories. Today you’ll find delicious international cuisine, artisans, designers, importers, performers and more.

Can you share an interesting fact or two about the markets?

The cobblestones at the main entrance to the building used to line the floor of the market, which would alert people a horse and cart was coming thanks to the noise it would make.

What’s been your favourite memory so far as CEO of Fremantle Markets?

Winning the Fremantle Chamber Business Awards for Tourism Excellence and for regularly being acknowledged for doing our part for tourism in Fremantle. Our tenants have really struggled through COVID. Yes, they were all given significant rent reductions but that’s not what keeps you in business, people supporting you and spending in your business does. I’m very passionate about promoting local businesses, local produce and re-activating our local shopping precincts.

Aside from Fremantle Markets, where are your favourite places to visit around Freo?

I have a 5-year-old so I can tell you Freo has the best Toyworld I’ve been to! I also love the Old Synagogue, Bread in Common, Coast, Benny’s and Pasta Addiction.
