The City of Fremantle is encouraging residents to acknowledge their local heroes by nominating them for the 2022 Community Citizen of the Year Awards.
This year’s theme is ‘We’re all part of the story’, and the awards will recognise individuals and organisations that have made a standout contribution to their local community.
Outstanding contribution and community service includes areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, social inclusion or any other area that enhances community wellbeing.
The awards are split into four categories including Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year (65 years or over), Young Citizen of the Year (under 25 years) and the Active Citizenship Award (community group or event).
Fremantle Deputy Mayor Andrew Sullivan said it was important to recognise local individuals and organisations who went above and beyond for their community.
“The Community Citizen of the Year Awards are a great opportunity to highlight our many incredible and inspiring role models and the valuable work they’re doing to make a positive difference,” Cr Sullivan said.
“Nominating someone is easy and simple, but the effects it has on the recipient is monumental. A lot of people take huge pride in contributing to making Freo a better place, and that deserves to be rewarded.”
This year’s Fremantle Citizen of the Year Award went to Tim McGrath, who established the Cycling Without Age chapter in Fremantle, a not-for-profit organisation that allows elderly and people with a disability to experience an outdoor ride on trishaw e-bikes piloted by volunteer cyclists.
Fremantle Men’s Community Shed Founding President and Lifelong Member Bill Johnstone was named Senior Citizen of the Year, youth champions Caitlin Eaton and Midaiah Harnett took home the youth category and Freo Farmers Market won the Active Citizenship Award.
The 2022 Community Citizen of the Year nominations close on Sunday 31 October. Nominations received after the closing date will be ineligible for consideration.
