What do birds, bees and bingo have in common? Biodiversity Month in Canterbury-Bankstown!
This September and October, it’s time to celebrate the different types of plants and animals that call our City home, learn more about the strange antics of bees or play “bird bingo” in your own backyard.
Mayor Khal Asfour said there’s no doubt that diversity is Canterbury-Bankstown’s calling card.
“We’re a City of diverse people! It’s no wonder we’re home to a beautiful mix of plants and animals as well,” Mayor Asfour said.
“No doubt these are difficult times, but we will continue to look after each other, and our City; that includes protecting and preserving our environment.”
As part of Biodiversity Month, Council is hosting a free webinar on the strange life of bees with expert Dr Francisco Garcis Bulle from the University of Sydney on Thursday 23 September from 5.30pm.
For animal lovers, learn about the native animals that live in our City with wildlife ecologist Anne Carey on Wednesday 29 September from 5pm.
If you prefer to get outdoors, join citizen scientists across the country for the Aussie Backyard Bird Count starting Monday 18 October.
“If you love birds, bingo or both, follow us on Facebook for nine local birds you can spot in your own backyard from the 18th,” Mayor Asfour said.
“Take 20 minutes out of your day to spot some birds and be part of a massive research project that aims to learn more about the birds that live near us.
The City of Canterbury Bankstown is home to 230 species of birds and a staggering 590 species of plants.
When it is safe to do so, Council will also be planting more trees and native plants to boost biodiversity.
