A $1.1 million project to revolutionise Murrabit’s stormwater infrastructure by converting its current open drain network to an underground drainage infrastructure system is about to commence development.
“The Murrabit Stormwater project, will improve the liveability and amenity for residents and visitors to Murrabit by minimising deep spoon drains and standing water conducive to disease-carrying mosquitos during the warmer months of the year,” said Chief Executive Officer Tom O'Reilly.
“In addition, the new underground infrastructure will also provide a more effective treatment of stormwater, reducing the severity of rainfall events such as ponding within the Murrabit township.”
Works are scheduled to commence from 13 September, 2021, and expected to be completed by early 2022, with Council planning to construct the first four of six proposed stages. The first stages will involve installing stormwater drainage throughout Murrabit and the construction of a detention basin and pump station at the intersection of Browning Ave and Church St.
During construction, residents and visitors can expect Gonn Avenue to remain open to traffic at all times. However, Browning Avenue and Danson Street will be closed to through traffic at various times, with detours in place to minimise disruption to motorists. Council and the contractor will notify residents as these disruptions occur.
“The project can progress thanks to $1.1m funded through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
The Murrabit Stormwater project forms part of the $16.542 million capital works program Council commenced delivery of in July this year, adding to the significant investment in a range of other Council projects across the Gannawarra.
"As with many of this year's projects, the Murrabit Stormwater Project was developed through strong local collaboration with the Murrabit community,” said Mr. O’Reilly.
“Council looks forward to the improvements the Stormwater project will provide to Murrabit. Not only in reducing standing water and risks associated with arbovirus but also the flow-on economic benefits this project will provide to residents and visitors now and into the future,” said Mr. O’Reilly.
