New policy to focus on affordable housing needs in shire

Council is developing a high level Affordable Housing Policy that will help understand Council’s role in affordable housing in the shire.

Affordable housing, as distinct from housing affordability or affordable living, specifically focuses on the housing needs of the very low, low and moderate income households.

It is identified as a priority area in the draft Council Plan 2021-2031 and draft Health and Wellbeing Plan 2021-2025.

The Big Housing Build program, announced by the Victorian Government in November 2020, is providing $5.3 billion investment in social and affordable housing.

As part of the program, $30 million has been identified as the minimum investment in the Macedon Ranges shire, providing an opportunity to increase social and affordable housing in the shire.

A new Victorian Government agency, Homes Victoria, will deliver Victoria’s Big Housing Build.

Mayor, Councillor Jennifer Anderson, said, “This is an important piece of work required to understand the extent of affordable housing need in the shire, and to clarify the role that we can play alongside the Victorian Government in creating housing to meet that need.”

The draft policy will be presented for consideration at the October 2021 Council Meeting.
