With school holidays on the horizon, students across Liverpool can reap hours of enjoyment from Liverpool City Council’s upcoming September school holiday program. Developed in partnership with Liverpool City Library, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Liverpool Regional Museum, the comprehensive program is running entirely online in accordance with current stay-at-home orders across Greater Sydney.
Mayor of Liverpool Wendy Waller said Council has worked hard to develop a diverse and compelling spring school holidays program.
“While it is disappointing that stay-at-home orders have prevented us from using Council’s great venues and outdoor spaces for our school holidays program, we still have a fantastic program combining free and affordable activities tailored to a diverse range of ages.
“Council is keeping up its commitment to the hardworking parents of Liverpool who continue to face the trials and tribulations of home-schooling during this period.
“I encourage parents to head to Council’s website to see the range of activities on offer focusing on fun, learning and physical activity,” Mayor Waller said.
For students aged between 7 – 17, Council’s program features an interactive online FIFA 21 tournament and multiple virtual bootcamp sessions, hosted in partnership with professional trainers from Michael Clarke Recreation Centre.
This will be complemented by virtual workshops and classes facilitated by Liverpool City Library on a range of skills and topics from coding and Dungeons and Dragons to a demonstration of bushfood cooking by a First Nations educator.
Meanwhile, Liverpool Regional Museum is encouraging students aged between 9 – 14 to become a part of its Curator and Collector Club to learn about collecting and share their own collection with the museum in a two-part workshop.
Casula Powerhouse will run a program of drama and art workshops for students aged 5 – 15 years, including live Zoom arts, crafts and performance classes and even a behind-the-scenes look at how the Powerhouse builds its art collection facilitated by its Registrar Megan Hillyer.
The program follows Casula Powerhouse broadening public access to its online exhibition with over 250 artworks from the collection now able to be enjoyed freely from anywhere in the world.
These include recent acquisitions, significant collection artworks, local artists, and artworks by First Nations artists. Also included is a recent new release of 40 artworks featuring local Liverpool artists Di Hallinan and Paul Brocklebank.
“Bookings are essential for all of our activities and are filling up quickly, so best to get in quick,” Mayor Waller said.
