Images by young snappers are a winner

An impromptu image of a baby cradled by his mother and a water fountain captured at dusk have been selected as winners of the Little Sydney Lives photography competition.

Milena Bate from Summer Hill was the winner of the 3 to 7 years age category for her shot My New Brother In Sydney, while Layla Rose Moshi from Bossley Park was selected as the winner in the 8 to 12 years age category for Wishing Well.

Milena and Layla Rose’s images were selected as winners from dozens of entries, with each winner picking up a new digital camera and photography accessories worth $500.

The winning images were selected from 20 finalists by a panel of judges including National Geographic photographer Michaela Skovranova, Magnum Photo Agency member Trent Parke and TV personality Justine Clarke. The winners were announced today on the City of Sydney’s website.

“It was very difficult to pick the winners, but for me the winning images both reflect a sense of hope,” Justine said.

“One through the view of new life in an intimate family portrait, the other a beautiful exploration of light and movement.

“Both reflect the times in which we are living now, the intimacy of home and family life and outside, a quiet place in the sun to dream.

“The images also show skill and a photographer’s talent to capture an arresting moment. Congratulations to all the finalists! It’s been a privilege to see Sydney through your eyes.”

Runner-up photography prize packs were also awarded in each category. Teddy Jones from Dulwich Hill was the age 3 to 7 runner-up for his image Rainy Red Runaway, and Sonya Clarke from Beaumont Hills was the age 8 to 12 runner-up for her image FOMO – Building Media Relations.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said while it is disappointing the annual outdoor exhibition of finalist images could not go ahead due to the current lockdown, a digital gallery was created so the images and stories behind them could still be enjoyed by everyone.

“We really hoped that, despite the difficulties, the event would still go ahead, and although the annual Hyde Park exhibition can’t be held this year, I’m so thrilled we’ve been able to create a digital gallery for this year’s finalists,” the Lord Mayor said.

“These images reflect joyful, unique perspectives of life in our city and I encourage everyone to check them out online.”

Little Sydney Lives is part of the City of Sydney’s year-round Art & About program of events and temporary art projects in unusual spaces throughout the city.
