Minor Parking Restrictions Planned for Margaret River Town Centre

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River Councilors have voted to implement minor parking restrictions in some specific parking bays on the Margaret River Main Street. These restrictions have been designed to ease particular issues relating to deliveries, taxis and customer access to the Main Street pharmacies. 

A survey undertaken by the Shire earlier in the year revealed community resistance to the implementation of timed parking in the town centre. Many respondents felt that it didn’t reflect the ‘laidback vibe’ of the town. However, there was general agreement that in some instances parking restrictions are useful to ease specific challenges.  

Restrictions supported include:

30min timed parking restriction (1 bay) fronting both chemists (next to ACROD bays) from 6.30am – 6.30pm and the 2 bays fronting the newsagent with an additional restriction of 3 hours from 6.30pm -6.30am.

In addition, Council supported testing of the following restrictions for a period of six months:

A 24-hour taxi rank fronting Sidekick Café and Margaret River Artisan Store; A peak area taxi zone (Fri & Sat nights 10pm – 2am) fronting Teddi’s Big Spoon – Toastface Grillah; and

A longer testing period was agreed to support Post Office deliveries:

Testing of one bay as a mail zone (reserved for mail vehicles only) for a period of 12 months opposite the Post Office on Town View Terrace.

Director Sustainable Development and Infrastructure Services Nick Logan believes that the minor parking restrictions will enable people the better access critical services.

“Our goal is always to support our local community. Following community consultation, the decision to restrict parking times has been limited to meet our community’s need for ease of access to particular facilities. This decision wasn’t taken lightly, but after much consideration and community liaison, feedback showed a limited appetite for wider restrictions. Currently this balanced approach is the best way to help Main Street businesses and customers,” he explained.

Parking restrictions are set to be in place by the beginning of November.
