Colourful Cardinia kids to help with Rix Road childcare artwork Published: 20 September 2021

Cardinia Shire kids are encouraged to submit butterfly designs online for Rix Road childcare centre public artwork.

The designs will inform a kinetic butterfly sculpture commissioned for Cardinia Shire Council’s new Rix Road Integrated Child and Family Centre.

The design, incorporating light and movement, features 23 different-coloured butterflies around 60cms across, made of steel and glass and inlaid with optical film to refract colour.

Skunk Control, the art collective commissioned to create the artwork, specialises in engaging works that provide opportunities for discovery and delight, drawing on technology, design and art as well as their backgrounds in engineering, science and education.

“Children are invited to submit their ideas online using the template downloadable from our Creating Cardinia website,” explained Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Owen.

“Simply print, colour, snap or scan then submit to let us know what colours you’d like to see in the final artwork.”

The completed butterflies will be gathered by the artist and the most popular colour scheme proposed will be used for the art installation.
