The Western Downs is celebrating its seniors with a range of activities planned throughout the region during Queensland Seniors Month.
Celebrated throughout October, Seniors Month is an opportunity to recognise the contributions of our older residents, change the way we think about aging, and reconnect with the community.
Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said Seniors Month recognised the vital role our local seniors play in the region’s active, vibrant community.
“Senior’s Month is a wonderful opportunity to recognise everything our senior citizens do and have done in the community. They have helped shape the Western Downs, so it’s important that they know they are valued,” Cr Maguire said.
“It’s also a chance to foster and strengthen social connections, which is particularly important given the challenges COVID-19 has presented over the past two years.
“Council is proud to have secured funding through a partnership with the Queensland Government and local community groups to host a wide range of activities around the region.
“There is something for everyone, from morning teas, bowls days and technology classes taking place across the region.”
Cr Maguire said one of the highlights was Seniors Movie Events, where seniors will be treated to discounted screenings at the Chinchilla Cinema.
“On top of the various activities happening in local towns, seniors will get to enjoy discounted screenings of the film ‘Dream Horse’ at Chinchilla Cinema, with popcorn included in the $2 ticket price,” she said.
“Free buses will be running from Miles, Tara and Dalby with a pick-up location in each town to ensure our seniors have a chance to be a part of the movie fun.”
“We encourage our seniors to get involved, take the opportunity to come together and catch up with friends and family and connect with the community.”
