Playground upgrades create places for all

Sensory play zones, accessible carousels and climbing pyramids are just some of the amazing new features available for the community, after the City of Canterbury Bankstown recently upgraded four popular local playgrounds.

Killara Reserve, Flinders Slopes, Playford Park and Harold Street Reserve were recently upgraded to improve accessibility, inclusiveness and safety.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said there’s now something for the whole family with our newly upgraded from sensory play zones that stimulate early learning, to climbing pyramids for older children to enjoy. There are also outdoor gyms near the play equipment, which means parents can join in on the fun too.

“Our newly upgraded playgrounds now cater to a broader range of age groups and abilities, including children with disabilities,” Mayor Asfour said.

Killara Reserve, in Panania, has seen improvements at all levels – with the installation of a 4.3-metre-high climbing pyramid, along with a wheelchair accessible carousel that’s flush to the ground.

“Parents can relax in the new shelter with clear sightlines to monitor their children as they engage in imaginative play,” Mayor Asfour said.

“And we’ve increased the playgrounds accessibility with a new path connecting it to Bismire Street.”

Upgrades to Playford Park in Padstow have incorporated educational learning with animal patterns showing their development from babies to mature adults. The location takes advantage of existing mature trees to provide the playground with natural shade.

Flinders Slopes playground in Lansdowne (which will be opening soon), has also been made more accessible with its relocation closer to the main circulation path, new wayfinding signage and footpath to the carpark.

“Exciting new features at Flinders Slopes include a skyrider flying fox with an all-ability harness seat and a four-metre high activity net to challenge older children,” Mayor Asfour said.

The new layout of Harold Street Reserve, Campsie, creates a more open and welcoming space with increased shelter and seating options.

“Kids can engage in dynamic play with the new climbing mounds, while others can enjoy the maze at the playground entrance that encourages imaginative play,” Mayor Asfour said.

“I cannot wait to bring my kids down and see our community take full advantage of these incredible play spaces.”

These upgrades were completed as part of the Playgrounds and Play Spaces Strategic Plan’s objective to provide state-of-the-art amenities for everyone in our community to enjoy.
