Countdown to launch "outer spaces"

We have lift-off! After more than 100 days in lockdown, the countdown is finally over. Celebrating more freedoms, the City of Canterbury Bankstown is installing 10 delightful spaces welcoming residents back to their local shops starting this month.

The outdoor spaces, to be located in town centres across the City, will delight shoppers and encourage them to visit, stay and shop to support our local economy.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the timing could not have been better.

“This week is the week for haircuts, shopping, eating out, and having a drink in a bar – the timing is perfect to see something fun in a suburb near you,” Mayor Asfour said.

“I can’t say how ecstatic I am that local businesses are open again, and after the last few months, this is another incentive to shop local and support grocers, restaurants and specialty stores that make our City special.

“We cannot wait to welcome you back.”

Shoppers will be treated to light-up houses, seating with a splash of greenery, hammocks and swings, fun musical pipes and more as part of the Streets as Shared Spaces Program.

The public will be able to visit the first four spaces by the end of October, and these will be in place for 12 months.

The next six spaces have been designed for: Chester Hill; George Hall; Revesby; Padstow; Belmore; and Narwee. Designs are now open for public comment on Council’s Have Your Say website. They will be installed by January 2022.

In addition to supporting businesses, the project will make less used parts of the City more bright, beautiful and useful.

Funding for the spaces was received from the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces Program.
