Council is today launching its Which Bin? Competition: an exciting competition to challenge local residents and encourage the correct disposal of recycling and organic waste in the Shire. The competition will see Cleanaway representatives inspecting the kerbside yellow and green bins of registered residents to see if recycling and organic waste have been placed in the correct bin.

On average across the region, one in three truckloads of waste placed in recyclable bins is ending up in landfill because of contamination. The Which Bin? Competition coincides with National Recycling Week in November and serves as a timely reminder to residents of the importance of correct bin usage and waste disposal.

“Placing the right waste, in the right bin, on the right day is the key to our 3 bin system.  Residents may not realise that incorrect use of their kerbside bins by quickly shoving a few items in their recycling or organic bin that shouldn’t be there, can result in a whole truckload of waste going to landfill due to the contamination caused by those items” outlined Council’s Waste Support Officer, Dayna Walker.

“The sorting of recyclable and organic waste is done by hand – not machines – and contamination can often mean that our recycling efforts are being wasted.”

To make residential waste disposal more convenient and to assist members of the community, Council has a FREE Waste App which is a great resource for all things waste-related in the Moree Plains.

The app is available for download through the App Store or Google Play and contains a calendar to let you know which bin week it is, information on how items are to be disposed of, and details of Council’s waste facilities. The app makes figuring out what can be placed in each bin easy.

To participate in the Which Bin? Competition, residents must register their property details in the “Which Bin? Competition Registration” via the Waste App. Registration is open from today.

From next Monday 1 November, registered addresses will be randomly selected for inspection. If your address is selected, your green or yellow bin (depending on the week) must be put out for the kerbside collection on your usual collection day. Its contents will be inspected and if no contamination is found in your bin, then you will be our weekly winner and win a $250 Love Local gift card - it’s that simple! If contamination is detected, inspections will continue until staff find a registered residence with a bin free of contaminants.

Council has launched this competition to encourage residents to download the free MPSC Waste app, encourage correct recycling practices and reduce contamination rates in the kerbside recycling and organics collection service.

“I encourage all residents to download the app and get involved in the competition,” said Waste Manager Tahra Sayers. “With Christmas coming up, a Love Local gift card is a great prize to support our local businesses that have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and could be yours if you register and put the right waste in the right bin.

“Meaningful waste management begins at home and residents can do their bit for the environment by using their bins correctly. This competition is a great way to encourage this,” said Mrs. Sayers.

Mrs. Sayers invited residents to register to be part of the competition, “Registrations are now open via the Waste App using the form tab. This is the only way to enter this competition.

“Once registered don’t forget to check what you are putting in your bin as contamination will lead to disqualification from the competition!” added Mrs. Sayers.
