Nhulunbuy, NT – East Arnhem Regional Council has recently been backed by $150,000 from the Aboriginals Benefit Account to conduct a series of camps that are aimed to deepen the connection between indigenous youth and their culture.
In his release the Hon. Ken Wyatt Minister for Indigenous Australians stated, “Culture is core to a person’s identity and how they relate to the world. We know that when young Indigenous Australians have strong bonds with their culture, they are more likely to thrive and less likely to suffer from social, emotional and mental health issues – that’s why we’re helping support more ways they can participate in cultural practices.” (Original release here)
The objective of these cultural camps is to increase access to bush trips for young people across Yolngu communities to support the wellbeing and resilience of young people; enhance positive social and cultural participation and foster cultural promotion and retention. These camps are also aimed to improve and strengthen the existing Youth Diversion service. This project will be delivered in the communities of Yirrkala, Gapuwiyak, Galiwin’ku, Milingimbi, Ramingining, and Gunyangara.
East Arnhem Regional Council is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Local Government Council passionate about championing community led initiatives, which drive meaningful outcomes for young people.
The Council would like to thank the Hon. Minister Ken Wyatt and the National Indigenous Australians Agency for the extended support towards the people and communities of East Arnhem Land.
