Our contractors have been hard at work since September removing sand from the mouth of Narrabeen lagoon to enable the entrance to remain open for a number of years and reduce the risk of flooding to properties in the catchment.
Around 13,000 m3 of sand has now been removed and relocated further down on Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach. The works are on track to be completed in December, ready for the busy summer holiday period.
Council undertakes these large clearances every 3-4 years with the last completed in 2018. As sand accumulation in the entrance grows towards the end of this cycle, we have to undertake more frequent mechanical openings which we’ve been doing throughout this year to manage any flood risk.
Council has also been developing a long term Entrance Management Strategy for the lagoon, with a number of options put to the community for discussion earlier this year. You can view the options paper here.
Council received 115 submissions from this process which have been used to inform the development of the Strategy. The draft report was discussed with a panel of industry experts in late August, and since then our consultants have been finalising the Strategy. When that process is complete, we will bring the final Strategy to the community for feedback on the short, medium and long-term solutions for managing the entrance.
