Grandparents' grand day to remember

This Grandparents Day will be one to remember as the City of Canterbury Bankstown connects younger generations to those who helped shape and form our City into the community it is today.

For weeks, grandchildren of all ages have been encouraged to send in entries of photos or drawings that explore why grandparents are so special.

While grandparents have been asked to reflect on what makes being a grandparent so great, in order to celebrate Grandparents Day this Sunday (31 October).

Belfield’s Max, 8, said he has a special bond with his Nanna and made a mug for her as a gift.

“My Nanna never says no to me, she lets me do things that Mum and Dad say no to,” Max said.

“She always makes me lime milkshakes, and on Wednesdays she buys me fish and chips.”

Mayor Khal Asfour said grandparents have a special place in our hearts, no matter how old someone is.

“From philosophers to age-old proverbs that praise our elders, all our lives are so much richer because of the unconditional and incomparable love our grandparents give to us,” he said.

“This day is about us taking a moment to recognise, thank and appreciate the important role grandparents, and older people, play in our lives.

“Grandparents are vessels of wisdom that offer us some of life’s most valuable lessons. I know I learnt so much from my own.

“They are so selfless and find more joy in giving than receiving. So, to take a page from their book, we’re looking to give out prizes to some of the entries we’ve received from the community, with winners to be determined by a public vote that’s open to the community on our Facebook page.”
