A decision on the location of a skate facility in the Town of Cottesloe has been made, with Council voting to approve the recommendation of John Black Dune Park as the preferred site at the September 2021 Ordinary Council Meeting.

At the March 2021 Council Meeting earlier this year it was decided, following the review of work previously done to identify the possibility of a skate facility in Cottesloe, that John Black Dune and the northern end of the future redeveloped Cottesloe Foreshore’s recreational area were the two locations suitable for a district size skate park of approximately 600-800 m2.

Community members were invited to register their interest to attend a workshop to explore the strengths and weaknesses of each location, led by an independent consultant. Workshops were held in May, followed by a survey which was made available to the wider community, allowing all residents and ratepayers in Cottesloe the opportunity to provide their feedback.

962 valid responses were received and taken into consideration, along with the feedback received from the workshops. These results were analysed with the overall result showing John Black Dune Park to be the preferred location.

Town of Cottesloe Acting Mayor Lorraine Young said, “After a number of years of working on this, we are pleased to have an approved location for a skate facility.

“Thank you to everyone who got involved and contributed to the consultation stages – your feedback has been essential for the outcome of this project.

“We are looking forward to moving ahead with the next stage, and to delivering a space for the youth in our community as soon as we can.”

The Town will now work towards developing a concept design in consultation with a skate park consultant and the youth members of the Cottesloe community. The concept design will be brought back to an Ordinary Council Meeting for approval, prior to the Town approaching the State Government for funding opportunities.
